This is immediately apparent with their upcoming album, Balancing, where the first track opens more like a relaxing new age album with atmospheric female vocals and soft guitar. But as the verse comes in with a solid beat and a determined rap, you know your in for something special. The entire album delivers on the promise it makes in the first track. Not only are the lyrics full of meaning, but they are delivered as such: full of power and confidence. Not once does this music doubt itself.
But these are, of course, features that can be found any great hip-hop album, rare as they are these days. Just to make sure you know the music is really worth your time, it's expertly arranged. This is a characteristic that hip-hop severely lacks. Not so with Gnos-tel-jah. You could strip away all the vocals and you would still have great music! To put it simply: Gnos-tel-jah has created something that is greater than the sum of its parts. It has powerfully delivered lyrical poetry constantly weaving around mysterious female vocals that drip with emotion, with wonderfully composed and arranged music holding it all together underneath.
I can say with confidence that whatever your opinions of rap, this album is worth every moment of your time. Do not make the mistake of dismissing this as 'just another rap album'.
Gnos-tel-jah's album Balancing is currently set for a September release. If you can't wait that long to hear some Gnos-tel-jah, here are links to their previous album:
